Ruben Perez is excited to be joining and working at Obra D. Tompkins in Katy ISD. Mr. Perez began his teaching career in Fort Bend ISD at David Crockett Middle School as the assistant choir director. In his two years of teaching at the middle school level, he thoroughly enjoyed working with excellent directors and gaining a deeper understanding of the nuances of the developing young voice. Mr. Perez’s choirs performed successfully at UIL, as well as at district festivals. In 2019, his sixth-grade tenor-bass choir earned recognition as the best of FBISD in their division.
After graduating from Mayde Creek High School in Katy ISD, Ruben went on to study music education at Stephen F. Austin State University. Upon acceptance into the university and the School of Music, he was awarded a choral scholarship, the David Jones Scholarship, the Ron Anderson Scholarship, and the Regents’ Scholarship. During his undergraduate studies, Ruben participated in the opera program at SFA, performing roles such as Harry Easter and George Jones in Street Scene, Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Marco in Gianni Schicchi. He earned membership in the prestigious SFA A Cappella Choir, where he also served as section leader and officer. In his junior year, he was inaugurated into the music honors fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda. He graduated magna cum laude in 2015, and knew immediately he wanted to pursue a master’s degree in choral conducting.
During his graduate studies, Ruben worked closely with the head of choral activities at SFA, Dr. Tim King, as his graduate assistant, as well as with Dr. Tod Fish, associate director. Through his assistantship, Ruben provided mentorship to students in undergraduate conducting and choral materials classes. Also, he was awarded membership into the select chamber ensemble, the Madrigal Singers. After graduating, he married his college sweetheart, Elaina, and moved to Pearland, Texas, where they live with their rescue dog, Nala.
When Mr. Perez is not teaching or researching, his hobbies include serving on his church’s worship team, playing Madden X-box games with friends, and enjoying quality time with his wife and their pup. Mr. Perez is more than excited to return to his home in Katy and gain the opportunity to give back to the community that nurtured his love for music.
